Location: Wokingham
We recently designed and installed these stunning Solarlux SL60e three panel grey bifold doors into a kitchen extension in a lovely family home in Wokingham.
The detached property was built by Heron Homes over 40 years ago in the early 1980s and is situated on a much sought-after road in the popular Woosehill development in Wokingham.
Customer retention is important to Thames Valley Windows, so we were delighted that our Wokingham clients decided to return to us for a glazing solution for their kitchen extension. It had been six years since we installed double glazed windows into their previous property.
Our Wokingham homeowners brief was for a thermally insulated glazing solution that offered more glass and less frame to maximise daylight in the open plan kitchen/living area. Also, with a growing young family, they wanted a secure door system that offered a multi-point locking system.
The patio door design, functionality and energy efficiency were essential factors for the homeowners. They wanted to remove the existing French doors and have sliding doors or a bifold door system with a flush track. During the summer, when open, it would extend the living space out onto the patio area, creating a seamless transmission between indoor and outdoor space.
When the Wokingham homeowners contacted us, their architect had already submitted the planning application to the Wokingham council, awaiting approval.
Although the UK was in a national lockdown due to COVID-19, our MD and designer, Ryan Schofield, worked remotely with the Wokingham homeowners, builder and architect to recommend the best glazing solution for the kitchen extension.
As the kitchen extension was to the side of the house, part of the design was to convert the garage, so rather than opting for a pitched tiled roof with rooflights, they choose a contemporary flat roof with a roof lantern.
Our slimmest aluminium bi-folding door system, the Solarlux SL60e, are designed with children in mind making them the perfect choice to replace the French doors.
Beautifully designed and engineered, the minimalist design adds elegance to any property; thanks to the innovative design of a bionicTURTLE, the frames can be constructed to ultra-slim proportions whilst being strong and durable.
Despite the expanse of glass, these external bi-folding doors are thermally broken and offer an average overall u-value of 1.4 w/m2k,
The Solarlux aluminium bi-fold patio doors were configured to meet the size of each new opening and designed with three panels in total, including a traffic door, for quick and easy access in and out.
The panels slide from right to left and slide safely along the stainless steel runners. When partially open, each panel can also be locked into position individually to ensure they do not move. When fully open, they offer unobstructed views of the garden.
When fully locked, these high-quality aluminium folding doors are highly secure. The two-point espagnolette locking system locks the panels into the top and bottom track of the frame.
The SL60e bi-folding door system is manufactured from high-quality aluminium, offers an outstanding anti-burglary protection level, and comes with an RC2 certification as standard.
Whilst anthracite grey aluminium bi-folding doors are a popular choice for homeowners. Our Wokingham customers decided on a fine-textured stunning metallic grey colour (DB703) both inside and out.
An Atlas roof lantern was the perfect choice to meet their brief requirement of more glass and less frame. Designed with a sleek and minimalist design with ultra-slim sightlines ensures that maximum natural light can filter through regardless of the sun’s position throughout the day.
The end result is stunning. The combination of the Solarlux SL60e bi-folding door and Atlas roof lantern add a beautiful contemporary architectural feature to the property. The large glazing panels enhance the aesthetics of the interior and brighten up the whole open plan living space offering a sense of spaciousness.
The slim aluminium frames of the bifold create an impressive glass wall that enhances the facade of the detached property and maximises the flow of natural light, which creates an illusion of a spacious room.
High energy-efficient soft coat Low E glazing, argon gas, and a solid multi-chamber profile with a foam core offer fantastic heat insulation and will help to lower energy bills for the Wokingham homeowners.
In addition to installing these stylish grey bifold doors, we also installed white uPVC flush casement windows to the rear of the property that has been designed without trickle vents, so the homeowners have installed a PIV unit to satisfy building ventilation requirements.
The Wokingham homeowners are delighted with their glazing solution for their kitchen extension. The slim profile of the double-glazed windows and grey bifold door doors offers excellent thermal performance.
Thanks to the latest technological innovation in glazing, glass is the most space-enhancing and versatile material available to transform kitchen renovations or new home extensions. Making it the number one choice with architects, builders and homeowners
