There is no denying that the cost of living is steadily going up, including the price of gas and electricity which are currently soaring. Cheap energy tariffs have disappeared over the last few months and very few if any energy suppliers are offering fixed tariffs.
Based on Ofgem’s calculations in April 2022 the price cap on out-of-contract tariffs rose by 54% for a typical household.
That means many people are struggling to pay heating bills and are doing what they can to reduce the carbon footprint within their homes to save money on energy bills where possible.
From installing a smart meter that will automatically submit accurate monthly meter readings to using energy-saving light bulbs, drying washing outside instead of using a tumble dryer and only running a dishwasher and washing machine when full, are just a few ways to reduce electricity within your home.
One way to reduce your energy bills, which in turn reduces the amount spent on energy, is to install new energy-efficient windows and new doors in your home or dwelling.
Over time, external and internal furnishings such as doors and windows can start to degrade from long exposure to the elements, especially in areas that are cold, wet or damp. This can lead to things like the framing of the windows or doors becoming damaged, which could cause cold draughts to come into your home or allow for heat to escape from your home.
If your doors or window frames are made from wood, the wood can warp over time meaning that gaps could appear, letting hot air out and cold air in.
Windows and doors should generally be replaced every ten to twenty years depending on how old the house or dwelling is. So if you have recently moved into an older property, you might want to think about installing new energy-efficient doors and windows.
Installing energy-efficient windows in your home can be a great way to save money on energy expenses or even to help reduce the amount of energy you need to heat your home.
Energy-efficient windows create an insulated barrier which sits between the multiple glass panes which help to trap hot air inside your home, ensuring that it doesn’t escape. Equally, they also help in reducing the amount of cold air that comes into your home through the glass window or frame.
Generally, argon gas is used to fill the gaps between the panes of glass to help boost the insulation of the windows.
Windows can vary when it comes to how energy-efficient they are. Double glazed windows will offer a fair amount of insulation and can help lower the energy usage needed to heat your home. Triple glazed windows will offer even more insulation again, further reducing the amount of energy required to keep your home warm.
Much like energy-efficient windows, you can also get energy-efficient doors to install in your home. They are used to prevent the amount of cold air that can seep into your home as well as prevent hot air from being lost. This can help you save large amounts of money on energy costs when totalled up over time.
External doors are required to comply with certain regulations which require them to have a certain amount of insulation built into them.
Installing double-glazed windows can be a relatively cheap way of saving some money on energy usage to heat your home. You can start saving as soon as their installed. Whilst double-glazed windows can vary in price depending on the glass you use you can expect to see a reduction in the amount of energy you will need to use in your home almost immediately.
Triple-glazed windows also allow for a huge reduction in energy usage, saving you lots of money in the long run, however, triple-glazed windows are more expensive to install so may take longer to become profitable in terms of reducing the amount of energy you are using and spending money on.
Installing energy-efficient doors on an older home can be a massive upgrade which can really help when it comes to reducing the amount of energy required to heat your home. Doors that comply with the insulation regulations might not be installed on older homes, so installing a new regulatory-compliant door can see huge savings in energy cost and usage.
If you find that you are spending a lot of money on energy, and using more energy to heat your home in the winter months, then it is definitely worth installing new energy-efficient windows and doors within your home. This can greatly reduce your overall energy usage and help you save on energy costs at a time when energy costs are greatly increasing.
