Commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) ensures that Architects and developers keep up to date with the latest developments and gain a certain number of points per year to maintain their RIBA registration.

Our CPD RIBA seminars are available in person at our Bracknell showroom or your practice and delivered by a Solarlux or Internorm representative or one of our designers. Each meeting will open with a welcome from the representative and finish with a Q & A session.

Following each CPD RIBA seminar, our designers will be on hand to discuss any projects you may be working on, demonstrate products, offer general advice, and provide competitive quotes.

If the event is held at our headquarters, you will also have the opportunity for a guided tour of our showroom. Our showroom features products from multiple manufacturers, including PVC, Timber, Aluminium, and Composite profiles, at various price points to give your clients the greatest possible choice and budget options.

At this time, we offer three CPD seminars:

To Slide Or Fold, That Is The Question

Duration of CPD – 1 to 2 Hours

The seminar provides an overview of bi-folding and sliding door systems and is designed to help you understand the following topics:

    • The Solarlux Story – A brief history over three presentation slides describing the origins of the company, its product ranges and where it is today.
    • How? What? When? Where? – Discuss the factors to consider when specifying glazing products.
    • The Evolution of the Sliding / Folding Sliding Door & Glass—Discuss how Sliding and folding doors came about and their uses in today’s society. Also, discuss the evolution of glass and its current standards in today’s glazed doors.
    • Materials—Discuss the types of materials used in a modern Sliding or Folding door and the pros and cons of each.
    • Pros & Cons of each system. (views/sightline etc.) – Discuss and describe, when specifying one door over the other, which product will give a distinct advantage
    • Usage & Operation. (Sizes) (where does it lead) (Orientation solar gain)
    • Quality, Testing & Performance Standards – Discuss testing standards and the criteria used to measure these products regarding security, weather testing, robustness etc.
    • Installation & Maintenance – Discuss how to correctly look after and maintain these high-quality products to ensure longevity.

    Glazing For The Future?

Duration of CPD – 1 to 2 Hours

This interactive Internorm seminar examines the advances in new window innovations and technologies.

It will provide you with the knowledge, recommended process, and design considerations to help specify the right window system for each project.

You will gain up-to-date specifications and allow you to listen and understand the following topics:

    • Explore the history of window development and an introduction to current requirements for performance
    • How to decide which materials can be used when specifying different window systems. Explore the advantages and disadvantages of using metal, timber, UPVC and composite materials
    • Understand the importance of glass and the development from single to multiple-pane glazing systems.
    • This is an overview of the latest glass technologies available and how to choose what is suitable for your project in terms of insulation, thermal performance, acoustics, ventilation, and solar shading.

Windows and Doors for Passive House

This CPD now also has the endorsement of the UK Passivhaus Trust, which means that Passivhaus Designers will be awarded 2x credit points from the Passive House Institute towards the renewal of their certification. So now there is even more reason to book this CPD.

Duration of CPD – 1  Hour

Detailed introduction to high-performance windows and doors for Passivhaus buildings, including Passivhaus criteria, thermal performance and comfort, heat loss, thermal bridging, air tightness, fitting, avoiding overheating, solar shading, certification, product information and case studies.

    Learning Objectives

    • Passivhaus model (How the model has evolved since the early 1960s)
    • Main Passivhaus criteria relating to the performance of windows (space heating demand, airtightness)
    • Present situation in the UK (stock of old building – new building regulations)
    • Heat loss from windows – Understanding the Uw. Discuss the difference between Uw and Psi opaque as quality criteria for high-performing windows.
    • The main advantages of investing in a Passivhaus building/embracing Passivhaus design principles
    • Thermal comfort – temperature asymmetry & temperature stratification
    • How thermal comfort requirement affects the Uw value on Passivhaus windows.
    • Surface temperature factors are a hygiene criterion for windows. Mould growth is a risk indicator, and surface temperature factors are another quality criterion for high-quality windows.
    • The main pillars of a Passivhaus
    • Passivhaus suitable installation examples – minimising the installation thermal bridge heat losses /airtight installation
    • How to avoid overheating (e.g. shading, night purge ventilation)
    • Recommended Uw values for Passivhaus windows
    • Installation/Glazing edge thermal bridge effect
    • Internorm Passivhaus window systems and award-winning projects
    • Modern, minimal glazing systems development

This training session is intended to:

    • Provide an in-depth presentation of qualitative parameters affecting the performance of windows suitable for Passivhaus projects.
    • Emphasise how windows affect energy balance, thermal comfort (winter scenario), and overheating (summer scenario). The presentation will last approximately one hour.
