Location: Henley-on-Thames
The homeowners contacted Thames Valley Windows in 2021 to design an architectural glazing solution for their renovated 1970s house project. We had been recommended to the homeowners by a friend that we designed and installed windows and doors in their home.
The Henley-on-Thames homeowners purchased the 1970s property in 2019; as is familiar with homes built in the 70s, they were designed with an unimaginative, disconnected layout, with a poor connection to the beautiful garden. The property had been subject to an extension in the nineties, but it still needed to be suited to modern living, which did not take advantage of the beautiful countryside views.
The family home is situated on the sought-after residential road in the popular Thameside village of Lower Shiplake, nestled in the rich and green countryside within its picturesque gardens.
This stunning, recently renovated riverside property has been transformed into a beautiful, free-flowing contemporary family home through significant remodelling and extension.
Part of the renovated 1970s house project was to modernise the house’s exterior appearance. These included the introduction of large glazed sliding doors and windows with balconies on the first floor, creating an indoor-outdoor feel.
A friend recommended Thames Valley Windows as they had seen and liked the windows and doors we had designed and installed. When the Henley-on-Thames homeowners contacted us to discuss their requirements for an architectural glazing solution, they already had the architect plans for the large-scale retrofit and house extension.
The changes to the Henley-on-Thames meant planning permission was needed. The architects of New British Design applied for this, which the South Oxfordshire District Council approved.
Our sales director, Paul Mills, contacted the homeowners to discuss their plans and listened carefully to the requirements. Their brief was they required high-performance aluminium windows and doors to Passivhaus principles to achieve an all-year-round comfortable living environment with extremely low energy requirements for heating and cooling.
Whatever the scale or budget, Paul works closely with all his customers to deliver an energy-efficient architectural glazing solution sensitive to property aesthetics. He has a vast amount of experience in the glazing industry. He has gained an understanding of costs and recognises the importance of architects’ and homeowners’ requirements to achieve the best value from a client’s budget.
The Henley-on-Thames homeowners made an appointment at our Bracknell showroom to view the range of aluminium windows and doors on display.
As there’s quite a mixture of glazing products for the rear elevation, there were many options to view and discuss, considering the sunlight and views at different times of the day. The homeowners wanted to discuss the possibilities with their builders before deciding.
Paul prepared a few quotes for the different options, and after discussions between the builders and architects, the Vision20 slimline sliding doors (with incredibly slim 20mm sightlines) were chosen to run across the rear of the property and connect the house with the outside. The sliding doors feature a twin track.
Luxury meets functionality with the Vision20 ultra slim sliding door system. It was chosen for its visually impressive floor-to-ceiling large glazed areas with a virtually frameless profile with the option of embedding the outer frame into the wall cavity, offering a contemporary and dynamic frameless all-glass effect.
Air MOD Externally glazed for the fixed windows and Solarlux Ecoline Bifolding doors, they were undecided about the colour as it was between RAL9006 and RAL9007.
Paul’s exceptional vision and creative design skills allowed him to work with homeowners and builders and design an intelligent and impeccable glazing solution to the homeowner’s brief to transform how they live in their home. He recommended combining bespoke double-glazed products from different manufacturers to achieve consistent sight lines and slim profiles that beautifully entwine to create a house with a seamless connection to the outside.
At Thames Valley Windows, we love a good before and after project. Overall, this renovated 1970s House was a great success. It is impressive. It is fantastic to see where the house started and is now.
This was a straightforward process From design to installation, thanks to our team’s attention to detail and glazing expertise.
Inside and outside, this Henley-on-Thames property is the epitome of style. On the ground floor, It has three dramatic double-height glazed walls: the impressive open-plan kitchen/ living room and the lovely hallway, which is flooded with light thanks to the two striking double-height glazed walls at either end.
At the first-floor level, a new bedroom was created above the garage with sliding doors and Juliet balcony glazing to maximise views over the front of the house and beyond.
The traditional brickwork was replaced with a crisp cream render and has a clean appearance; the light grey aluminium frames provide a contemporary contrast.
The thermal performance of the Henley-on-Thames property is enhanced by new & replacement low u-value double-glazed windows and doors that increase daylight levels, low-profile under-floor heating throughout and retrofit external wall insulation.
