We are thrilled to announce that our partnership with Snug Architects and Chisholm & Winch to design an architectural glazing solution for a Women’s Rehabilitation Center, “Hope Street,” in Southampton, has won the 2024 MacEwen Award in the Community Support category.
Hope Street, an outstanding testament to a collective effort, is steadily progressing towards the prestigious BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating. This significant milestone is a direct result of the responsible engagement of One Small Thing and its esteemed stakeholders. The project’s environmental impact, a tangible reflection of their shared commitment, is evident in its exceptional natural daylighting, thermal insulation, air source heat pump heat supply, and the reduction of embodied energy through a cross-laminated timber frame.
Yet, Hope Street’s true essence lies in its profound social sustainability. It serves as a beacon of hope for women in the justice system, offering more than just a safe space. It provides a transformative journey, a path to confront past traumas and forge a sustainable future. This journey, guided by dedicated support, is at the heart of Hope Street’s mission, and we are proud to have been a part of it.
The RIBAJ MacEwen Award was established in 2016 to recognise and celebrate architecture that serves a greater purpose. Despite requiring extra effort, the award has yielded numerous benefits. Each year, the award has continued to grow and evolve. RIBA has always been adaptable in defining what ‘common good’ means, as entrants demonstrate how the context of architecture changes. However, at its core, the awards focus on responsible architecture that serves the broader interest.
