Black Heritage Aluminium Windows, Wargrave

This beautiful period cottage situated on a village green setting in Wargrave, Berkshire, still had the original steel crittal windows installed from the 1920s. Our client was looking to upgrade the windows but keep the narrow frames and maintain the character of the property.

Thames Valley Windows installed black heritage aluminium double glazed windows with a traditional rectangle lead and art-deco style Georgian bar design. We replicated the original proportions of the windows with a flat square design, which matched the original steel crittal frames.

We used a blackened and soldered 12mm lead to the front elevation to reproduce the existing rectangle lead design. This meant that the front elevation looked largely unchanged.

The side elevation and rear windows were part of an extension carried out in the 1930s and had an art-deco style Georgian bar. Using the Heritage aluminium window we were able to create a flat over-lapping aluminium Georgian bar for a truly period look.

The original tiled sills were left untouched. Internally we used a period style monkey-tail handle with matching peg-stay.

The end result is an almost like-for-like appearance, but with improved thermal and acoustic performance, meaning a warmer and quieter home.

The gallery above shows the ‘before’ photos as well the neighbouring house which has the original steel crittal frames. This shows that the replacement aluminium windows are very much in line with the original.
