Minimalistic Flat Rooflight and Anthracite Grey Bifolds for rear extension of Terraced House, Ascot in Berkshire

Location: Ascot in Berkshire

A Minimalistic Flat Rooflight and three-pane Anthracite Grey Bifolds have created a light-filled living space for a three-story cream-rendered terraced house in Ascot in Berkshire.

The terraced home is on a sought-after residential road in Ascot, close to Royal Ascot Racecourse and High Street.

The homeowners had lived in the Ascot property since 2009 and decided they would like to add extra space with a rear extension.

When they contacted us, their planning application was approved. They had been working with a local architect from Reading, HAC Designs.

The homeowner briefed the architect on their new rear extension, a minimalistic rooflight or lantern and aluminium bi-folding doors opening to the garden, creating a light and open living space.

Our architectural designer, Paul Schofield, worked with the homeowners to design an architectural glazing solution that maximised natural light and provided direct access to the garden area.

Paul recommended the double-glazed Luminia F82 Plus bi-fold door system from AluK as it is a cost-effective minimalistic door system with an ultra-slim 97mm sightline and a low u-value of 1.2 W/m²K. For the flat roof, he recommended Atlas flat rooflight, a contemporary architectural aluminium flat roof system.

The Ascot homeowner chose a minimally framed double-glazed three-panel Luminia F82 Plus bi-fold door system with a traffic door finished in Anthracite grey (RAL 9016) and high-quality powder coating inside and outside. The contemporary flat roof light lantern is finished in anthracite grey on the external and white on the inside.

The bi-folds have high-performance, toughened argon gas-filled glazing units paired with a black spacer bar and a soft coat of Low E glass to ensure a comfortable and sustainable living space.

AluK, a leading UK Manufacturer of innovative aluminium systems, has produced aluminium bifold doors for over 25 years at its headquarters in Chepstow, Wales. Its high-performing aluminium windows and doors are energy-efficient and meet and exceed industry standards. They are tested and certified in third-party accredited facilities.

Their range of market-leading Bifolding doors surpasses UK building regulations for security and thermal performance, making them a favoured choice for UK homeowners, architects, and developers.

AluK aluminium windows and doors are aesthetically pleasing and fully accredited by Secured by Design and Pas 24 certified, ensuring peace of mind.

The non-opening flat rooflight offers visible elegance with a frameless, minimalistic appearance both inside and out. Outside the low-profile flat rooflight design and edge-to-edge glazing mean the rooflight ensures an unobtrusive aesthetic

Designed with a structural aluminium thermally broken frame, this feature offers contemporary sightlines and narrow internal lines that sit flush with the internal plaster, creating an illusion of space and maximising light in the living area.

They are manufactured with a superior aluminium and toughened double-glazed unit. They offer superior thermal properties and an overall U-value of 1.0 w/m²k, with a minimum 5-degree pitched kerb for weather resistance and water tightness.

Atlas is a market leader in rooflights technology. They offer one of the most elegant contemporary structural aluminium roof lanterns and roof lights with ultra-slim sightlines. All roof products are accredited by Secured By Design (SBD). They have achieved the British Standard Kitemark and ISO 9001 for craftsmanship, attention to detail, and high quality.

All Atlas Roof products are custom-made in a cutting-edge UK facility. They feature ultra-slim sightlines, high-quality aluminium, and a level of attention to detail from years of expert craftsmanship.

They provide outstanding thermal performance thanks to innovative polyamide thermal breaks, unlike traditional aluminium roof systems, which can be made to order in various RAL and dual colours.

The architects designed the three-meter rear extension to take advantage of the extra space created.

The rear extension perfectly enhances this Ascot terraced house and remains sympathetic to the property’s aesthetics.

The homeowners now benefit from a light and airy thermally insulated home extension that they can enjoy all year round.

The beauty of the rear extension is the state-of-the-art Luminia F82 Plus bi-fold door system, which offers the slimmest sightlines and floor-to-ceiling walls. This creates a seamless transition between the inside and outside, providing a spatial arrangement of light and airiness.

The contemporary minimal framed flat roof light provides a minimalist glazing solution that illuminates the living space and complements the warm, homely interior with its contemporary fine lines, edge-to-edge glazing and flawless internal finish.

The ultra-slim bifold doors and contemporary flat roof light are the perfect fusion of practicality and style that amplify natural light throughout the living space and add sleek sophistication to the interior decor while ensuring comfortable ventilation.

The dark grey frames look modern and sleek against the cream-rendered property.

The frameless flat glass rooflight is manufactured to offer superior thermal efficiencies and an overall U-value of 1.0 w/m²k. Sitting flush to the internal plaster line creates the illusion of space and brings abundant natural light.
