Modern Orangery Extension with Large Slimline Sliding Doors, Bourne End

We recently installed large slimline sliding doors into a luxurious modern orangery extension to a detached property in Bourne End.

The family home is located on a highly desirable road in Bourne End, a popular Buckinghamshire village.

When the Bourne-End homeowners purchased the property in 2018, they had plans and ideas for a complete home renovation to increase the size of the property and reconfigure the space to create a more even flow throughout that is appropriate for modern family living.

This included replacing the existing semi-derelict conservatory with a flat roof modern Orangery extension in a minimal design, creating a new family room off the rear open plan kitchen/dining area that opens up directly onto the large garden.

Thames Valley Windows were appointed to design an architectural glazing solution to refurbish this detached property.

The homeowners who had an eye for design were keen to balance contemporary design whilst maintaining as much of the original house’s character.

Part of their brief was to modernise the home with large areas of glazing, especially on the ground floor, to bring the outside in and create a seamless connection to the garden from every room and achieve some perfect vistas of the exterior, maximise natural light and space into the property.

All of the windows and doors for this home renovation project have been redesigned and replaced with energy-efficient double and triple glazing to enhance acoustic and thermal performance.

Working to the builder’s schedule, all the glazing was installed in three phases: timber alternative Georgian windows, timber front door, and the modern Orangery extension.

The homeowners chose Solarlux bi-folding and slimline sliding doors and two Atlas frameless flat roof lights for the modern orangery extension for their minimalist detailing, outstanding performance, exceptional energy efficiency and maximum light.

The new modern orangery extension has been designed so that two of the three sides can be open on warm days, and when closed, the slim sightlines of the sliding doors create a phenomenal floor to ceiling wall of glass that offers the most stunning effect.

The brickwork to one side of the extension has been matched perfectly, so the extension blends seamlessly with the house.

The large slimline sliding doors run the entire width of the modern Orangery extension and offer the perfect combination of a beautifully minimalist 34mm thermally-broken aluminium frame and extra clear triple glazing offering 98% maximum visible clarity making this one of the most invisible sliding door systems on the market.

A stunning sleek sliding door system offers floor-to-ceiling glass doors with no visible frame. Each large Cero panel weighs more than 100kg yet is easy to open and close.

The frameless flat rooflights sit flush with the internal plaster line creating the illusion of space and bringing maximum light down into the living space. They are manufactured with a structural PVCu inner core to offer superior thermal properties and an overall U-value of 1.0 w/m²k.

The Bourne end property boasts another two sets of bi-folding doors at the rear of the property to the kitchen and living room. The low maintenance aluminium is finished in the stylish powder coated dark grey DB703 both inside and outside.

The historical definition of an Orangery is a glass room where oranges and lemons were traditionally grown during the winter months in the 17th century.

Traditional Orangery extensions are designed with a combination of high-performance glass roof lanterns, windows and French doors with brick pillars, internal pelmet and decorative cornice to create a living space with a touch of grandeur.

We are thrilled to have been part of this house transformation of a tired detached property in Bourne end. The end result is stunning. The minimalist detailing of the family room brings a modern twist on traditional Orangery with a restrained, elegant aesthetic.

The modern Orangery extension has been finished to the highest specification and has given the rear of the property a real wow factor by the spectacular virtually frameless Cero II sliding doors positioned to enjoy the beautiful sunset on those long summer evenings, whether open or closed.

The transformation of the front of the house is impressive and hardly recognisable from when the homeowners purchased it. The facade had been covered in a drab render and wooden beams.

This was removed as part of the home renovation, and the brickwork was sandblasted, repaired, and repointed.
