Location: Hungerford
We recently replaced steel windows in stone mullions with slimline aluminium Heritage 47 windows for a spectacular country home in the heart of the beautiful Hungerford countryside.
When the homeowners contacted Thames Valley Windows, they were in the process of buying the Hungerford property, so they were keen to get a quote for double-glazed timber windows to replace the existing ovolo-moulded stone mullions and single-glazed steel frame windows.
The beautiful country home is built of stone with mullioned windows. It is part of a larger equestrian estate located in a secluded rural setting with panoramic views across the Berkshire Downs.
With many years in the glazing industry, our designer Rob is passionate about traditional British aesthetics. He has a deep understanding of period architectural styles. He is one of our specialists in designing architectural glazing solutions to bring modern-day living to period properties whilst retaining the building’s architectural integrity.
A bespoke thermally efficient window solution, in keeping with the period features of the property, was paramount within the homeowner’s brief.
Rob contacted the Hungerford homeowners to discuss their home improvement project. He was keen to arrange a site visit before he could provide a quote. He wanted to see how deep the existing steel frame windows were and, indeed, what impact the thickness of the frames had on the stone mullions.
His concern was the thickness of timber frame windows compared to steel frame windows.
Choosing new windows takes a lot of research, planning, decisions, discussions and time. With Rob’s knowledge, experience and attention to detail, he worked closely with the homeowners, discussed ideas, and explored options.
After visiting the Hungerford property, a vision was born. Rob recommended that the Heritage 47 aluminium windows would be the best window system to replace the existing windows providing a bespoke and sympathetic solution.
Heritage 47 window and door systems are expertly manufactured and crafted to closely mimic an original steel window frame’s proportions and thin transom and mullion features.
It is manufactured for optimal weather resistance and thermal performance with a traditional heritage look available in an array of RAL colours.
With this aluminium system, the minimal sightlines ensure the units are as unobtrusive as possible.
Rob designed the proportions of the aluminium windows with precision and tradition and a flat square flush design, which matched the original steel-framed windows.
He also recommended a special colour powder-coated finish for the aluminium frames of RAL7032 pebble grey to enhance the cast stone window surrounds on both the exterior and interior.
Adding to the charm of the beautiful period features and stylish interiors throughout, the homeowners chose Antique black tear drop handles.
We have enjoyed being part of this home improvement journey. In total, we designed and installed 48 casement windows from the Heritage 47 system, an ideal discreet window solution for period and Heritage properties.
The clean line of the pebble grey window frames is an incredible transformation. The soft, muted natural stone colour looks stunning next to the expertly crafted stone mullions.

The Hungerford homeowners are delighted with their new windows and advised of the following:
Decision Making:
The quality of the product seemed to be high spec and used up-to-date technologies. As our property has stone mullion windows, we were steered towards the aluminium style of windows, which made a choice easier, but in the vast array of different options the company offers, I feel sure we would have used it if we were choosing a different product. It was great to visit the showroom and see examples in the flesh.
Expectations and Results:
The results definitely exceeded our expectations. I was very nervous but didn’t need to be! The glass’s quality difference compared to our previous windows was astounding! It was like looking at a crystal-clear photograph. Having previously had old white crittall windows, the new windows have quite literally transformed how our house looks. They look so slick, and the grey colour really compliments the stone. As well as being aesthetically pleasing, they have also made a huge difference to the draughts and rain that were previously able to get through – it has completely stopped it. We previously had huge issues with the build-up of condensation on the inside of the glass, which hasn’t happened since the new windows were installed.
Why did you choose Thames Valley Windows?
We got quotes from x2 different companies when we were researching, but hands down for us, the knowledge from Rob at TV Windows blew the other company out of the water – particularly as we were going for aluminium windows which we hadn’t dealt with before and didn’t know much about. Rob gave me so much advice on our choices before we had even bought the property! His extensive knowledge and the fact he was not your typical “pushy” salesman made him an easy choice to entrust the job too.
Overall Experience:
Brilliant – the communication and customer service from start to finish have been fantastic.
