Location: Newbury
We recently completed a second installation of secondary glazing for sash windows at a detached property in a beautiful tree-lined road situated in a picturesque village, in Newbury.
The homeowners first contacted Thames Valley Windows in August 2018, and secondary glazing was installed in their Newbury home in October 2018. Last year our clients returned to order some additional secondary glazing for their main bedroom and kitchen in their characterful home. Our client stated:
“We worked with Thames Valley Windows before; it was the price and quality of the secondary glazing that helped us to make our decision.”
“We chose TVW because it was a local company and would be better at time-keeping and more responsive than a national company.”
Although the property was not listed, or in a conservation area, aesthetics was a concern. The homeowners were keen to retain the character and features of their timber sash windows while looking to enhance the thermal insulation of their home.
Our clients family home has a significant number of very large single glazed Georgian sash windows, although they were draughty and losing heat they were keen to preserve the original windows. They were eager to ensure that any glazing solution did not harm the appearance of the windows or reduce any daylight entering into the property after discussing what they wanted to achieve with one of our designers. Granada secondary glazing system was recommended for all of the windows in rooms that were used regularly.
Secondary glazing is an excellent thermal barrier by creating an internal window, with a discreet, extra slimline glazing pane on the inside of the primary window, which is not visible on the outside of the property so does not distract from the beauty of your original windows.
As heat loss was an issue with the timber windows, the designer discussed the various glazing options such as low emissivity ‘K-glass’, solar rejection filters and UV blocking films and types of secondary glazing sliders. After consideration, it was decided that the additional secondary glazing units would be designed with horizontal sliders where previously they chose vertical sliders, However, they decided on the same low emissivity glass. This has a transparent coating on one side that has been specifically designed to reflect heat back into the room, reducing heat loss through the window.
Our clients were highly impressed with the designer’s knowledge and expertise in secondary glazing. They felt confident that the glazing solution would be thermally efficient and in keeping with the look they were trying to achieve for their home.
They contacted several double glazing window companies, as they wanted to ensure the quality of the secondary glazing would be the correct style and finish to complement their home.
After receiving a few highly competitive quotes, they decided the secondary glazing quality from Thames Valley Windows was superior to others and confirmed they were happy with the quote received and wanted to proceed with their order for their secondary glazing.
A couple of weeks after our client confirmed their second order, a highly trained surveyor visited our clients Newbury property to measure each window aperture, check proportions, and to discuss the installation and finish before placing the order with the manufacturer.
Soon after the order was placed an installation date was agreed with the client. The installation team arrived at the Newbury property in the middle of September and worked tidily and quickly to install three slimline secondary glazing units into the window revels of the existing windows consisting of two-pane horizontal sliders with 4mm toughened low-E glass.
All the site lines on the secondary glazing were designed to match up with the existing mullions to ensure that the Georgian sash windows retained their features and preserving the character of the house. While the aluminium frame was colour matched to the white window frames to ensure the secondary glazing for sash windows was discreet and unobtrusive both inside and out.
Our secondary glazing units were fitted into the brass rollers with a 200mm cavity from the original windows which still allowed for the kitchen blind to operate. The secondary glazing glides smoothly along the rollers, making them easy to use for regular ventilation.
Our clients have now been enjoying improved thermal insulation of the secondary glazing in their home for many months. They have advised us “The secondary glazing has made our house much warmer saving money on central heating bills and reducing the need for log fires/fan heaters.”
With regards to Thames Valley Windows, they advised “The overall experience with TVW has been very good” they also left us this excellent Trustpilot review of which we are delighted:
We are very pleased with the secondary glazing installed by Thames Valley Windows. The system works well, and we have a warmer house and are not spending so much on fuel
