White Aluminium Windows for 1929 Colonial-style House Refurbishment, Reading

Location: Reading

This stunning Reading property has benefitted from these high-performance white aluminium windows.

The Reading homeowners purchased this detached property in Reading in 2020. It is located within the highly sought-after Thameside village of Pangbourne with a spectacularly sized garden.

They were completely refurbishing the property, and the windows and doors are integral to the project.

Due to the scale of the refurbishment project, the homeowners had already appointed a local architect and builder, so when they contacted Thames Valley Windows, they already had their drawings and plans.

The detached property is thought to have been initially built in 1929; the previous homeowners had lived in the property for 30 years, during which time the house had been under extensions and renovation during their tenure.

The property’s existing timber windows were cold and draughty and prone to condensation and, over the years, had started to rot, enabling heat to escape through the poorly insulated wooden windows.

After researching local window companies and a recommendation from a neighbour, the homeowners contacted us requesting a quote for an architectural glazing solution for approximately twenty windows throughout the property.

Our designer, Rob, contacted the homeowners and worked with them to outline a brief. As the project involved a sensitive but significant intervention to replace the windows and doors in their early 20th-century Colonial-style house, he recommended visiting our Bracknell showroom to view the range of aluminium and timber windows we have on display.

The Reading homeowners wanted to improve the elegant, period-style aesthetics of the windows and increase energy efficiency with a sustainable double-glazing solution that would be sympathetic to the era of their home.

It was a demanding brief, but this is where Rob’s glazing experience, knowledge and design skills come into effect. He paid close attention to the period features and overall design of the windows and doors. After listening to the homeowner’s requirements, he adapted the window design to their standards. He recommended the Heritage 47 windows, French doors for the main house, and timber windows for the dormers.

After lengthy discussions and emails with Rob, the homeowners changed their refurbishment plans. They decided to opt for bespoke Heritage 47 aluminium casement windows with 24mm glazing bars finished in traffic white RAL9016 on the outside and inside. For the French aluminium doors, they chose a black finish.

Heritage 47 Aluminium Windows are an innovative window system designed to preserve the history of period properties with outstanding thermal performance and a secure locking system. The slimline window frames are designed with an inventive polyamide thermal break frame that exceeds Part L requirements and modern glass units to provide optimal energy efficiency and fully insulate properties to help reduce heat loss, carbon emissions and energy bills.

All the double-glazed units are argon gas-filled, with warm-edge clear spacer bars. They are A+ rated, toughened, and offer superb thermal efficiency and acoustic insulation.

The refurbishment of this exceptional 1929 Colonial-style home breathes natural light into this period property. The minimal glazing solution inside and out transforms the building into a light, contemporary space, offering views over the stunning mature garden.

The white powder-coated aluminium window frames create a harmonious, sophisticated interior and exterior white-rendered aesthetic. The antique black tear drop handles add the finishing touch to the interior and complement the characteristics of the period decorative elements of the house.

The Reading homeowners are delighted with their new double-glazed white aluminium windows and black French doors and advised:

I did a lot of research on windows – which was a very steep learning curve for me. The windows for our build were probably the most significant, costly part of our renovation. We decided to go predominantly with TVW Heritage 47 aluminium windows. I chose these as they sat comfortably alongside some new steel doors off the kitchen and four wooden windows we decided to retain and restore on the first floor.

Rob Legge was hugely helpful and very giving of his time. He talked me through the various options available from Thames Valley Windows and assisted me in making a very informed decision. He helped me to choose a window that was very in keeping with the style of the house and the other existing windows/doors.

In the end, we ordered approximately 25 windows and two doors from TVW. I have recommended Rob and TVW to several friends, and in fact, a neighbour recommended him to me in the first place.
The installation was on time, and after the window installation, TVW were very prompt and efficient in arranging for a team member to come and do some snagging.

On the whole, I was very pleased with the product and the service from Thames Valley Windows. The service at each stage – pre and post installation has been hugely responsive, with particular credit to Rob Legge
